Mr J.O. Lutted purchased Lot 5 Sec 1 of the Township of Morwell when it was made available by the Government in 1878 and started a wheelwright business. Later he sold to William Murdoch. The lot was then divided into three. There was a major fire in these buildings and others in 1890. In 1891 Murdoch built three solid brick shops on the site.
