In early Morwell, this area was the site of the War Memorial erected in 1921, and the railway crossing. In 1955, on closure of the railway crossing, the area was developed to include the first pedestrian subway and public toilet block.
In 1969 the war memorial was moved to International Plaza, opposite Hoyle Street, then in 1990 was moved to its permanent place outside the RSL in Tarwin Street. The original palm trees are still standing and are a feature of Legacy Place.
A further facelift and development in 2005 saw the area again being re-developed by repositioning the pedestrian subway eastwards and moving the public conveniences to the site vacated by the war memorial.
Legacy Place was established in 2006 by Advance Morwell with the unveiling of a bust in honour of Legacy Founder, Sir Stanley Savige. More information about Sir Stanley Savige can be found at Monument Australia.
In 2016 Advance Morwell added three outdoor musical instruments to enhance the area.
The area is now called Legacy Place.
