St Mary’s Church of England

Built in 1886 and extended in 1908, St Mary’s Church was used for worship until the erection of the new St Mary’s Church in 1958. In the 2nd plan of Morwell (October 1878) the north-west corner of Block 4, bounded by George, Belgian, chapel and white streets was shown as allotted to the trustees of the Church of England. St Mary’s church was built there at a cost of £300 and opened in 1886.

Since then, this site, together with the intervening section of George Street separating it from the state school (block 3), have been taken over by the education department and added to the school.

The foundation stone of the present church complex in Latrobe Road was unveiled by Miss Emma Bridle in 1958 and completed in 1980.
